A few months ago we discussed the major leakage issue going on in our porch. Water pouring through windows during rain storms. Our temporary fix? Duct Tape of course.
But duct tape doesn’t last forever (it actually started failing a few weeks ago). So the next best solution that was on our list (other than replacing the windows) was to put up some gutters. Easier said than done.
As you can see, when the porch was built gutter were not added (!??!) and water would just run off the roof and onto the window sills… and into our porch.
After some careful thinking and some research, Steve drew up some fancy shmancy gutter plans.
So here is Side A – the biggest culprit.
And Side B- almost three stories up. Hope we aren’t scared of heights!
And after two weekends of blood, sweat, and aluminum snipers… we have gutters. On one side at least :)
The process wasn’t actually that hard. It was more a pain in the behind to secure the ladders and go up and down every five minutes. The other side is going to be a completely different story. We aren’t going to have a porch to set the ladders on, just a 45 degree slanted hill. Should be interesting. Now that we are more familiar with how to work with the materials, it should go a little faster. In theory :)
Initially, Steve wanted to use vinyl gutters. They were a bit cheaper and seemed easier to assemble. Simply snap everything in place. However, the choice was made for us….
Luckily, my Dad had quite a few left over aluminum gutter pieces laying around, which saved us oodles of $$$. All in all, we ended up spending about $120-$150 – which includes the materials for Side B. I’m not sure how much a job like this would have cost to sub-out, but I’m sure it would be quite a few beans more. It would have been done a lot faster, but where is the fun in that??
Flair was very smitten with her little gutter piece. She is oh-so happy when she gets to help out.
Well that’s about it for now. One side down and one to go. I am hoping that this project prevent furthering leaking. Here’s to hoping…
Anyone else tackle gutters?? What does it cost to have it done?
